By harvesting plants for food and den sites, they create open water for ducks, geese, shorebirds and other wildlife. In addition, a variety of animals — including snakes, turtles, frogs, ducks and geese — use muskrat lodges and platforms to rest and nest.
That means that they need to find food and eat daily, even in cold weather. They still live in their main lodges, but ice covering the rest of its habitat restricts it to finding food underwater. Groundhogs are also variously referred to as woodchucks, whistle-pigs, or land-beavers.
The name whistle-pig comes from the fact that, when alarmed, a groundhog will emit a high-pitched whistle as a warning to the rest of his or her colony. While it is, fortunately, unlikely that they would fight, a groundhog could hurt or even kill a cat. They tend to be larger, have very sharp claws, and teeth, and are pretty good at fighting.
They are not aggressive towards cats, but would fight if threatened. Since your vaccinations are fine, I would just watch for gastrointestinal distress if he ate any of the groundhog, he may have vomiting or diarrhea and would probably ask your vet if he should be dewormed as well just in case the groundhog had any intestinal parasites if he ate any of it, he potentially could get ….
