Despite all the jokes Ray and Debra's marriage was far from picturesque, and the sitcom was never afraid to show the problems and conflicts of their marriage, as the best sitcoms do. In addition to this, the show never made one or the other to be the villain and allowed both characters to be empathetic. There problems and arguments continue throughout every season, from small disagreements to big arguments.
Like all marriages, it was a constant and daily effort to keep things moving along smoothly. Given that his name is in the title, there is no doubt that this is Raymond's show, and he remained the protagonist of the series throughout all nine seasons.
However, as the show went along, more characters were given more to do. This prevented the series from being repetitive and allowed the show's writers to flesh out other cast members' characters.
Entire episodes were dedicated to secondary characters, with Ray only appearing briefly. This was a tremendous breath of fresh air and prevented the show from getting stale. Even the best sitcoms decline in quality as jokes begin to wear thin and the writers' well of creativity begins to run dry.
However, this was not the case with Everybody Loves Raymond, and the series continued to provide laughs over all nine seasons, and the series fortunately never managed to outstay its welcome. The show wasn't canceled and left while it was still funny, delivering a great finale that wasn't afraid to be earnest.
When Robert and Amy get caught alone by fellow apartment tenants, they are desperate to find someplace where they can have some time to themselves. Memories of how they first met come flooding back when Ray and Debra prepare Ally for her first play date with a little boy.
The laughs continue in this fourth season of the hit sitcom, in which sportswriter Ray Barone and his wife cope with a topsy-turvy personal life -- made more complicated by Barone's wacky brother and parents, who happen to live across the street. It's a good indication that something is up when Debra's sister shows up for a visit with rosary beads and prayer cards as gifts for the kids.
When Ray hires his overwhelmingly annoying cousin Gerard to assist him, Ray is mortified when Debra points out how alike the two men are. Ray is bewildered but not altogether displeased when Debra starts initiating sex on a more than regular basis. It's as if they were newlyweds again.
Inspired by how well the Barones got along at Thanksgiving dinner, Debra is intent on finding a way to improve her relationship with Marie. While discussing the possibility of having to hold Michael back for another year of preschool, Ray is shocked to discover that he too was held back.
Ray believes he has found the ultimate Christmas gift for his parents. If nothing else, it will certainly be something they will remember forever. When Debra raises the notion that Robert's reluctance to commit to Amy may be a result of his being gay, Ray thinks she is beyond crazy. Ray and Debra have differing points of view on how to handle the situation when they learn Ally has been bullying another child on the school bus.
When Ray starts feeling guilty about the good example Frank is setting by attending church, he commits to becoming a regular parishioner. Ray feels guilty when he cancels plans with Robert, who then gets hurt in the line of duty when he should have been hanging out with his brother. As Debra and Ray celebrate their 10th anniversary, she discovers that he taped over their wedding video years before with the '91 Super Bowl. Debra throws the Barone family into turmoil when she finally creates a dish that everyone likes.
Ray can't believe it when he tastes Debra's braciole. Ray and Debra devise a plan to push Frank and Marie into making some new friends, thus leaving the older couple with less time to bother them. Debra realizes that all her time is spent with the kids, Ray and his family. She begs Ray to take the kids out more so she can have more "me" time. Still recuperating from his recent run-in with a bull, a cantankerous Robert is driving everyone crazy with his mean-spirited and nasty behavior.
When Ray witnesses Debra's annoyed reaction to everything he says and does, he checks the calendar and realizes it's that time of the month. No one realized how much of an effect the "bull incident" had on Robert's mental state, including his ability to confront fear and the unexpected.
While out for a family dinner, the Barones spot Robert's ex-wife, which prompts them to reminisce about the demise of his marriage. Italy isn't prepared for the Barone clan, who visits the motherland in the fifth season's opener. While Ray refuses to enjoy Rome's glories, brother Robert falls madly in love -- again. Back home, Ray kicks his fractious parents out of his house. When Marie surprises the family with the news that she's treating them all to a two-week vacation in Rome, everybody loves the idea except Raymond.
Ray and Debra lose their cool when Frank and Marie pull the ultimate unannounced visit to their home. Ray finally kicks them out of his house. Robert is in the position of having to choose his girlfriend, Amy, ex-wife Joanne or Italian bombshell Stefania to share the future with him.
When Ray breaks the difficult news to Ally about Pumpernickel's untimely demise, Debra insists that they give the beloved pet a proper burial. Tempers flare when Marie accuses Debra of not returning a borrowed canister that holds sentimental value. Debra insists that she already gave it back. Marie gathers Robert's ex-girlfriends Amy and Stefania and his female police partner, Judy, together so they can dissect his character.
When Ray realizes that his kids would rather spend time with their Uncle Robert than with him, he decides to do something about the situation. Although Debra has been aware her parents were having problems, she is devastated to learn they are planning to separate after 40 years of marriage.
